Wedding Church Décor: White Lilies

Okay, after our post on pink lily wedding décor, now is the time to reveal our white lily wedding décor… mmmm… wait a minute… I don’t see any lily here….

Tadaaa!!! Here’s the lilies….. the first image is the church aisle flower arrangements, in which lilies doesn’t suit in small flower arrangements like that, however for the main altar, we used white lilies, snapdragon, roses, hydrangea, ivy and SOI leaves.

American Style Flower Arranging (part 2)

The materials used to make the flower arrangement like this are snapdragon, gerberas, red and yellow celosia or cock comb and the foliage is anthurium leaf, red and green cordyline, futoy, alokasia or tombak Irian, justicia or rugball and ruscus.

And here’s the step by step tutorial:
  1. Prepare a round ceramic vase of medium height (15 - 20 cm). Fill in with wet floral foam, cut the top but leave 1 - 3 cm from the mouth of the vase and then trim the edges.
  2. Take a stem of snapdragon flower, measure the length approximately 3x the height of the vase, cut it. Then put it a bit in the middle, not in upright position but slightly skewed to the left. Do the same for the other two snapdragon but with different length, shorter than the first one.
Take 3 anthurium leaves, put it in sequence by using terracing techniques, give among them a bit distance so that not to stick together.
  1. Take 4 pieces of red cordyline, fold three of them each in different length. First put the longest leaf approximately 135° toward the right opposite the direction of the anthurium leaves, after that do the same for the rest of the leaves, all lead toward the middle.
  2. Take 3 pieces of green cordyline, now place them across from the red ones. Now the flowers arrangement has 3 dimensional look.
Take a gerbera, cut very short then attach at the front. From this one, do the same with the other four gerberas by using basing technique but in different height.
Make all the gerberas facing upwards, so they look like flower protected by the other higher flowers.

  1. Take some futoy stems (20-25 cm long), stick together by using wire, then place it in the middle of the arrangement. (You might need 2-3 skewers to do this)
Take 2 alokasia leaves then put them opposite direction to the snapdragon.
  1. Take some red celosia, cut them short and place them at the front on the left side of the gerbera while on the right side filled with 2 snapdragon (cut shorter than the other snapdragon placed opposite)
Take 2 stems of yellow celosia, placed below the alokasia.
  1. Last one, put justicia or rugball among yellow celosia, green cordyline, and red celosia. Then fill the empty place with foliage, cut it short to cover the floral foam. Make sure that there isn’t any floral foam seen, ok?
  2. Done.

The flower arrangement seen from the front and side view.

Up close look (image above), the red and yellow celosia look fantastic while the justicia or rugball looks so cute, doesn’t it? It is alike yellow sisal.

American Style Flower Arranging (part 1)

Still remember the workshop of Andy Djati Utomo which held by the IPBI DPC Bdg few weeks ago? We will write it into several posts just for you, our faithful readers, starting from this one. So, enjoy reading.

Here are some of the materials supplied by the sponsors. The flowers are snapdragon, anthurium, gerbera, celosia, bromelia, carnation, rubica, roses, caspea, phalaenopsis amabilis while the foliage's cordyline, futoy, foxtail, ruscus, lily paris leaf, anthurium marble, ivy, Ming fern and croton. There are some leaves that we seldom use ie. alokasia triangularis leaf or Tombak Irian, justicia or rugball (this one looks like yellow sisal), simelaria leaf, hemalomena leaf (it’s a kind of anthurium leaf but smaller in size).

As usual, Mr. Andy brought his assistants. That day he brought 3 assistants. They are Mr. Yohanes Triyono, Mr. Syaifuloh and uhmm... Mr. Choirudin(?) ups, I forgot the last one, sorry. They helped him preparing the materials such as filling futoy stem with wire so that it can be bent without broken or  sticking the flower stem with wire, especially for flowers which have soft stem such as gerberas, phalaenopsis, calla lilies and then covering it with floral tape. What they did were very helpful so that the workshop could run smoothly and finish on time.

Mr. Andy started his show by explaining characteristics of 3 styles in arranging flowers so that the participants could understand the differences among american, european and japanese style properly. If the european style is mass arranging, volume and uses a lot of flowers while Japanese style is vice versa, line arrangement and minimalist, then american style is between them ie 'mass-line' arrangement, there is space that is full or volume (usually in the center) but there is empty space and lines, too. The American style doesn't emphasize on the form of flower arrangement as in the european style. But it has a lot of flower arranging techniques. There are dozens techniques actually, and even added a new one every year, wow... In this occasion, Mr. Andy only taught three techniques ie basing, grouping and terracing.

These are some of the floral design made at the workshop. We'll give you a little glimpse, 'ginger & lemon'. Just imagine what kind of flower arrangement that would? Curious to know more? No other way, keep following our posting, ok?

Flower Today: Phalaenopsis Amabilis

Phalaenopsis Amabilis or In Indonesia called as 'Anggrek Bulan' is quite familiar in Indonesian society. It is one of the Indonesia's National Flowers. It's species of orchidaceae which its characteristic wide petals and its white colour. I don't know whether it's hybrid or not.

Pure white color with a bit yellow 'lip' make this flower look amazing and classy, doesn't it?

Wedding Church Decor: Red Tropical for Pentecost

Red is the liturgical color for this day, so for Pentecost this year we also decided to choose red tropical color  combined with other bold color such as orange and yellow. The materials used are heliconia or we call  it as 'Pisang Bugis', anthurium, roses, gerberas, daisies, green puma and a bit of baby's breath only for wedding ceremony decor such as hand bouquet, candle, chair and pew decoration.

This was the flower arrangement in front of the angel which placed on the right and left side of the sacristy table. We decorate the back of altar area only at big events such as Christmas, easter, Pentecost etc so not every week we have a chance to decorate the twin angels.

Because there was a ceremony of marriage a day before the Pentecost, so we also had to make decoration for the wedding ceremony such as these chairs and pews. The image below was the close-up of chairs and pews.

Overall view from front of the altar during the ceremony of marriage (image above) and an up close look of the altar (image below)

The flower arrangement in front of the Jesus statue (image above) and the seven candle stand which placed in front of Maria statue when the ceremony of the marriage (image below)

The bouquet and candle for bride and groom only consisted of red roses as the request of the bride so we only added the baby's breath to make them look brighter when photographed. The Bible-Cross-Rosary tray (image below).

Wrapping Paper as an Accent

Well, this will be the last on the flower demo at Hero supermarket series. This time it's about flower bouquet again!!! Still on the flower bouquet trend, it will be bold color! The bouquet consists of chrysanthemums only but with two colors, red and yellow. Very simple round shaped bouquet, the accent is at the wrappings. Unlike simple wrappings, lots of small folded  wrapping paper in yellow colored (just like triangle napkin) were first attached to the bouquet. Then another layer of orange colored wrapping bouquet was added. Unique!!!

Another close-up on the flower bouquet. Perfect for valentine’s day!!!!

Do check our post continuously since a more exciting flower post is coming soon.

The Orchid Asia Africa Expo (part 3)

These are what we bought at The Orchid Asia Africa Expo few weeks ago. We bought 2 pots plant of dendrobium. We purposely chose the plants that haven't bloomed all, some flowers at the top are still buds so that they will last longer. What we thought is right because it has almost been a month since we bought and those orchids still look beautiful. They are even more beautiful since the flowers are all blooming now.

Plant of the Day: Xanadu Philodendron

This kind of philodendron has unique leaves in appearance. The leaf looks like 'crocodile teeth', doesn't it? That's why it's also named Reptile Split Philo or in Indonesia it's most populer as philo 'gigi buaya'. Some of you could be familiar with this leaf, as it's often used in hand bouquets, table centerpieces or other small flower arrangements such as chairs and pew decoration. Fabulous leaf, right?

Kekar Plant Adoption

Does anyone know the name of this orchid? We don't know either since it includes rare species and seldom found at the market. It's also the first time we saw this orchid and it was at the booth of  Kekar Merah Putih.

There, we also saw giant orchid plant (named gigantea?) which almost extinct because of the illegal lodging. There were also other species of orchid which drastically decreasing in population hanging there.

Besides the almost extinct orchids, Kekar Merah Putih also brought some natural traditional products from  tribes in the inland Borneo, Kalimantan. They were woven fabric, hats, purses and hand bags from woven bamboo.

These rows of young orchid plants were not for sale but for adoption. Kekar Merah Putih is apparently a NGO, too. So, for those who are interested to adopt the almost extinct orchids or if you need further information about this can contact at the address below:

A Simple Gift Flower

Now, if you all wondering what exactly we did on the flower workshop at Hero supermarket last month, this is it.

Tadaaa!!!! A very cute and simple gift flower!!! This flower arrangements can be used as gift or as home décor. This is a new trend in which the flowers put side by side very tightly so that you can not see any empty place or can’t see the wet foam inside.

The grandma seriously put the flowers altogether. Since there were not many kinds of flowers used, so it’s not expensive. All you need were a small ceramic vase, some daisies, white roses and few indian bracelets as accessories.

Here’s the step by step :
1.      Prepare the pot and put wet foam inside
2.    Cut lots of daisies in same length, arrange then in four corner first to determine the radius of the flower arrangement. That was the old method (European Style) that we usually did before but here, use the new method, just place the daisies very tightly around the the oasis. The last method’s easier and quicker than the previous one but you have to keep the daisies in the same direction otherwise you’ll get unsymmetrical flower arrangements as a result!! So, which method you choose is up to you.
3.      Just put all the flowers side by side until the pot filled. By putting the flowers tightly side by side, the flower arrangements become more sturdy and can not easily broken if coincidentally rough touched. But off course it needs more flowers to do this.
4.      This is the outcome, but just daisies will be boring, so
5.      Put 2 white roses as focal point. It would be better if you choose the blooming ones.
6.      Done and here’s the result!

This is the final look after the indian bracelet attached. Cute, isn't it? It’s simple, even the first timer in arranging flowers at the workshop all managed to do it, so we’re sure you can do it also. Do try this at home and stay tune for our next post…..

The Orchid Asia Africa Expo (part 2)

Still from the Orchid Asia Africa Expo held in Bandung, we walked sightseeing from one booth to another looking for something interesting to decor our home living and then we saw a booth in which some women with lots of pots in plastic bags standing in front of it.  It was the booth of Eka Karya. Apparently there were many variants of orchids which commonly found in the market sold there but in reasonable price. No wonder they bought up a lot of orchid plants.

Clockwise is Tanida pink dendrobium, white spot phalaenopsis, Nexia purple anthurium and yellow phalaenopsis.

Besides selling various kinds of orchids, Eka Karya also sells dry moss and hydrogel, but I don't know whether they are really effective in growing the plant well. Anyway worth a try, right?

By the way, we bought 2 pots of dendrobium at Eka Karya. Curious to know what they are? Visit our next posting, ok?

Plant of the Day: Song of India Leaf

I don't know why this leaf is called as 'Song of India' in Indonesia, maybe it's from India, who knows?. As I know, it belongs to dracaena. Dracaena Reflexa is its Latin name. For florists, 'SOI' is often used as filler as it's very effective to cover the wet foam. It'll make a big flower arrangements look full in a moment and also doesn't look monotonous because of its colourful color of leaves (usually green with light yellow in the edge). Imagine if  there are only flowers in  a flower arrangements without any greenish at all, so boring right?

From appearance 'SOI' plant looks like 'suji' leaf, which famous as natural color for food in Indonesia.

The Bouquet Wrapping Ideas

Next on the flower workshop at Hero supermarket Bandung, was a demo and workshop on flower bouquet wrapping. Valentine’s still next year, but we’re very excited to see the wrapping technique!

Mmm… yellow, orange and spotlight green are said to be the wrapping color trend this year…. not to mention the bold red colored gerberas. First, the participants made the cascading flower bouquet by arranging few red gerberas, leaves of florida beauty, Xanadu or reptile split phylo and cordylne, secure it with floral tape. Next choose two color wrapping papers, wrap them one by one and last, tied the ribbons, and done!

The flowers were still red gerberas, but with lighter colored leaves and peach colored wrapping paper, the image instantly changed!!!

The enthusiastic ladies… wrap them tight !!!

This is the wrapping bouquet made by Mrs. Winny for Hero supermarket. See that the white roses were first covered with yellow wrapping paper before being arranged.
